Pippin by Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson
MAINSTAGE MUSCAL AT MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY
Pippin is a story about the oppurtunity of a lifetime- to be offered the extraordinary. But who can make that offer? That is what this production of Pippin focused on- the sell. To do this, we set the exterior story of the show in a seminar experience that will change your life. For costumes, this meant in the pre-show and opening, cast members wore sleek black looks with either a logo or #JoinUs, which was our catchphrase of the production. In order to make the sell, it needed to be flashy. For the interior, we were inspired by the works of Bob Mackie, as well as burlesque and drag artists. The color pallette was inspired by period research of jewlery that was rich with gold and jewels, to further sell the idea of luxery and success. The link between the exterior and the interior world were the Leading Player, who stayed in the modern aesthetic, and the crew members who came on stage, such as our Camera Op, wearing custom #JoinUs shirts.
