THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHTTIME BY STEVEN SIMMONS
MAINSTAGE PLAY AT MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY
For this show, it was very important to support the themes of connection and humanity through the eyes of Christopher, a neurodivergent 15 year old who struggles with navigating the world around him. To do this, color and lack thereof, was crucial. His hometown of Swindon was kept in very earthy, calming colors, while London had bright and triggering neon colors. Some specific colors that were very important were red and yellow. Red being his favorite color and what, quite literally, guides him in his journey, and yellow, being his least favorite and a very triggering color for him. Another way we accomplished this was by having the ensemble dressed in all grey and only being granted color as Christopher interacts and connects with them. This also allowed the Lighting Designer, Justin Stuart, to use them as canvases for his work as well.
